Hack4Colorado takes aim at quality of life apps

The hackathon gauntlet has been thrown down. Hack4Colorado attracted a record 260 people hacking civic apps to improve Colorado’s health and wellness, sports and fitness, tourism, sustainability, veterans and education.

The teams spanned the gamut of experience, ingenuity and ability to work without sleep. Below is the list of projects that were presented, the tech stack and other interesting tidbits.

Project: My Community Vote
Interactive public engagement web app.
Stack: AngularJS, Javascript, NodeJS, Esri, Leaflet and Denver.gov data
Challenge: Scattered data, legal language and hidden agendas. Denver Community Agendas are not geocoded which makes mapping difficult.
Future build: Merge government and public proposals. Integrate public feedback.

Project: Trail Safe WINNER – HEALTH TRACK
iOS app to specify trail location of hikers and provide notification system for loved ones/rescuers. System prompts user to check-in at specified intervals to assure safety.
Need: Search and Rescue is a $3.7M industry. More than 6,000 people lose their lives each year.
Stack: Esri and Open Colorado Trail maps
Future build: Future integrate Twitter data with Full Contact to alert others on trail of missing person. Use Alchemy API for semantic text analysis.

Project: Poll-O-Tron WINNER – OPEN GOV TRACK
Public opinion polling on social media. Simple way to collect and map data.
Stack: Django, Heroku, Open Colorado, Twitter Search API, Alchemy API, Esri and a custom-built API to aggregate Twitter and Alchemy.
Challenge: Not all Twitter users geo-code their tweets. Limits on data points.
Future build:

Project: Hired Heroes
App to bridge communication/vocabulary gap between military skills and civilian jobs to help veterans on the job hunt. Input military job code + zip code to find open job titles in your area.
Stack: Ruby on Rails, Career Builder API and SendGrid and Esri
Future build: Map additional veteran services and integrate job networking with LinkedIn. uUse Alchemy API to run military occupational text analysis.

Project: Move My Music
iPad educational app to create, manipulate, share and play their music on real instruments to combine arts and STEM education. Teacher can assess homework and assign new projects.
Stack: iOS, Gigabark (SMS), Play REST server and Heroku
Challenge:
Future build: Share lessons and created music with parents via SMS.

Project: Shout!
Geo-located, micro blogging for travelers interested in a rich, local cultural experience.
Stack: CCnx
Future build: Limit discovery range to 10-meter radius.

Project: AttaBoy!
Community marketplace for mutual motivation. Saves money against ineffective civic/public marketing campaigns. Provides premiums to encourage achieving goals.
Stack: Google oAuth, SendGrid API, Javascript and SQL
Challenge: Building a responsive web app.
Future build: Build out government API to better understand community.

Project: Who’s Your District
Help people understand their voting district and the people who represent them.
Stack: Python and Flask, Javascript, EC2 and Esri
Future build: Temporal trends and current events. Correlate legislative voting records. Drill down statehouse and local level. Submit feedback.

Project: Get Out
Plot hiking options and suggest provisions needed.
Stack: Heroku, Ruby on Rails, jQuery, Javascript, Google Maps API, Custom Selectjs EverTrail API and SendGrid
Challenge: EverTrail API didn’t work well.
Future build: Screen scrape EverTrail information.

Project: Tutor Grape WINNER – EDUCATION TRACK and BEST USE OF FULLCONTACT API and BEST USE OF ESRI API
Education app that links tutors and students. Community based learning network geographically. Responsive web app.
Stack: Ruby on Rails, custom front end framework, Full Contact API, SendGrid, Esri, Colorado Data Engine
Challenge: Creates filters for tutors to identify need: Drop out rates, Head Start and after school programs.
Future build: More social, rate tutors, progress, sponsor locations and filter sex offender data and prevent them from registering.

Project: Am I Healthy? WINNER – BEST USE OF iTRIAGE API
Mobile app that combines quantified physical data, social data, and inputs to determine whether you are healthy. Renders personal health chart. Aggregates info 7 days a week. Find doctors. Find and record symptoms. Provide gyms, restaurants, trails and other health-related businesses.
Stack: Titanium, Alchemy API and fitness trackers, twitter API, Facebook API, Full Contact API, ESRI, SendGrid and iTriage

Project: Grubb.io - WINNER SUSTAINABILITY TRACK
Web and mobile app to locate Urban farmers & producers and in-season organic foods. Help providers find selling locations and local zoning info for urban gardening/farming.
Stack: Epicurious API, Esri, USDA Farmers Market and Open Colorado zoning
Challenge: Cleaning up the data.

Project: iVote
Mobile app that gives voters instant, meaningful and measurable feedback to lawmakers.
Stack: Alchemy API, SendGrid and Twitter Search

Project: DeVice WINNER – BEST IN SHOW , TOURISM TRACK and BEST USE OF ESRI API
Locate and map Colorado’s best legal craft industries: coffee, beer, spirits and marijuana dispensaries. Responsive web platform.
Stack: Javascript, Heroku, PHP, Mondo DB, ESRI, Alchemy, FourSquare, SendGrid, OpenColorado

Project: The Great Cat Detective WINNER – BEST USE OF ALCHEMY API API and BEST USE OF SENDGRID API
Educational app for elementary and middle school students to learn how to use search engines more effectively.
Stack: Alchemy API and SendGrid

Project: Motion Matters
Movement therapy app for patients with traumatic brain injuries that connects to Wii/Kinnect controllers and provides data for the physical therapist. Uses simply open source online games.
Stack: Py game library, Wii controller, Github and Open NI SDK
Challenge: Provide healthcare staff with motion and velocity detection map to indicate patient’s motion and physical therapy needs.
Future build: Includes soundtrack with encouragement from parents.

Project: Camp the Rockies
Find and reserve a state camp site.
Stack: Ruby on Rails and scraped Active.com API
Future build: Read alerts, stability, mobile and improve camp importer.

Project: Tour Denver
Recommend local destinations on interactive mobile video.
Stack: Visit Denver video, Open Colorado, Popcorn,js. Twitter, Wikipedia API, Github and Leaflet
